When the idea of opening The Poisoned Pen first arose in 1988, Barbara knew the books, I knew computers. Both of us visited a number of other specialty bookstores, talked to a lot of people, and came up with a store location, design, and business plan. It’s been fun—and an occasional headache—to make it work. My role is tech—and bookseller—support, and delivering books to my mother-in-law, the famed killer reviewer, MM. My reading time is limited, but getting to know and enjoy such outstanding authors as Michael Connelly, Tom Perry, Pete Hautman, Lee Child, Val McDermid, Ruth Dudley Edwards, James Sallis, and the much-missed Ross Thomas is its own reward. Some day I hope to take a vacation without seeing a single author or book.
