Queen Victoria begins her story in 1861 on the night of Prince Albert’s death. Moving back and forth in time, she reveals her difficult childhood and bizarre inner world, her marriage and the wild grief of widowhood, the fragility of her youngest son Leopold, and the “outsider” lives of an Irish Catholic barrister and of the first female doctor in England (fictional). The two of them possess pieces of the puzzle Victoria pursues.
