The Defector (Putnam $27 July 22) opens just six months after the dramatic conclusion of Moscow Rules ($10).
Grigori Bulganov, the defector and former spy who twice saved Gabriel’s life in Moscow, has vanished without a trace from a busy street in London. CCTV shows his route and him stepping into a car. British intelligence is convinced Grigori was a double agent all along. Gabriel and the Office in Tel Aviv think Grigori was somehow abducted by disgraced but resurgent arms dealer Ivan Kharkov. Why?
