Detective Sloane Pearson of the Chicago PD has a mouth, attitude, and a pony tail the guys in the Area Five squad room can't resist. Sloane is after a serial rapist who likes his victims to fight. Sloane is fighting to nail the guy but everything gets in the way: the victims themselves, their stories; hard evidence; fellow cops, medicos, politicos, the whole Chicago machine with its many agendas and natural bullishness; her own weaknesses and fears.

This is a combative narrative from beginning to end: lots of energy, lots of attitude, fast paced. An unusual effort from the Edgar winner that really sucks you in. It pairs really well with the Megan Abbott novel in their joint Hell of a Woman sort of tour.
